Accelerated Reading Program (ARP)

Students are required to complete independent reading of a personally selected novel in school as well as at home.  Fifteen (15) minutes is given for SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) during 4th period each day.  Also, an additional 20-30 minutes is expected to be read at home daily.

Independent novels are selected by students based on their interests and their reading levels.  The reading level will be determined when the STAR test is completed during the first few weeks of school.  Students are responsible for checking to be sure that the novel they choose is at their reading level and that the novel has an ARP quiz available on the computer.

After reading the novel, students will take an ARP quiz in school. The quizzes may be taken during Homeroom Period, Activity Period, Flex Period, or during our Media Center (Library) Visits.  We visit the Media Center once every 6-day cycle.  For example, during the first 6-day cycle we visit to return books, select new books, read independently, and take ARP quizzes.  During the second 6-day cycle students receive lessons from the School Librarian.  Usually, after the lesson, there is ample time to take an ARP quiz.

No more than two quizzes are permitted to be taken per day.  If more than two are taken on the same day, then all of the accumulated points for that day will not be counted.  ARP points are accumulated for each year in middle school.  The points can be used at the ARP auction in May.  Students must earn 100 points to be invited to the auction. Students may carry over unused points from one year to the next without any penalty.
